A half day workshop on “Use of Nuclear Technique in Climate Smart Agriculture Practices” was held at the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) on 27th May 2022.
This workshop is organized by Life Sciences Division of SLAEB in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Mr. T.M.R. Tennakoon, Director General of SLAEB delivered the welcome address.
Key note speech on “Climate Smart Agricultural Practices” was given by the IAEA Expert and Soil Scientist of FAO/ IAEA, Dr. Mohammad Zaman. He explained the global experiences and importance of application of nuclear techniques in agriculture in order to overcome the challenges created by the climate change.
Mrs. Thiwanka Weerakkody, Scientific Officer of Life Sciences Division of SLAEB delivered a presentation on “Achievements in the use of nuclear techniques in soil erosion assessments and the way forward with the assistance of IAEA technical cooperation” and Mrs. Uththara Perera, Scientific Officer, Isotope Hydrology Section of SLAEB delivered a presentation on “Increase of Crop Productivity under Drought Conditions by Using Isotope Techniques to Optimize Water Usage”.
Senior academics of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and Scientific staff of the SLAEB attended the event. The gathering discussed the techniques in details relevant to ongoing agriculture related research and development activities of the country. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Champa Dissanayake, Director of Life Sciences Division of SLAEB.
