Expert mission to develop methodologies in the analysis of stable isotopes using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) and the awareness programme

This content is available only in English language.

dg2Stable isotope techniques are tools used by researchers worldwide in authenticating foodstuffs, tracing the drugs, identifying food adulterants, pollution monitoring, ground water monitoring, studies in marine ecosystems, diagnosis of diseases, understanding metabolic pathways in humans, and to answer many fundamental questions in nature. Stable isotopes already play an important role in research today and will become even more important for researchers in the future. Hence the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) is in the process of developing methodologies in the analysis of stable isotopes using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometric (IRMS) techniques. SLAEB has established the first ever IRMS laboratory in Sri Lanka at its laboratory complex located Colombo, Sri Lanka through the technical cooperation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and on a Government cost sharing.

The IAEA Expert Dr.Jean-Francois Helie from the Research Center on Earth System Dynamics-GEOTOP, Canada was at the SLAEBfrom 21st -25th January 2019 to assist laboratory staff in establishing these methodologies. Parallel to this expert mission, a half-day awareness programme organized by the Life Sciences Division of SLAEB was conducted on 24th January 2019 at the SLAEB. More than 25 participants from different stakeholder institutes in Sri Lanka attended the above workshop.

The prime objective of this programme was to make aware the potential end-users of the stable isotope applications in their respective fields.
