National Workshop on Development of Safety Regulations and Guides for Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs)
Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) in collaboration with Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC) organized the National workshop on Development of Safety Regulations and Guides for Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) from 9th to 12th February 2026 at SLAERC, Kelaniya, Sri Lanka.
The workshop was attended by 35 representatives from key national stakeholder institutions, including the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB), Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC), Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of foreign affairs, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), National System Operator (NSO), Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), and Central Environmental Authority (CEA).
Objective of the Workshop
The main purpose of the workshop was to provide guidance to countries embarking on nuclear power programmes, particularly in effectively carrying out one of the core functions of a nuclear regulatory body the development of safety regulations and implementation guidance. The programme aimed to strengthen national capacity in establishing a robust regulatory framework for nuclear power development in Sri Lanka.

Key Focus Areas
The workshop focused on providing information and guidance on regulatory approaches for nuclear power programmes, with particular emphasis on the development of safety regulations and regulatory guides in line with international best practices and IAEA safety standards. Participants engaged in technical discussions, case studies, and knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance their understanding of regulatory frameworks required for nuclear power plant safety oversight.
This national workshop represents a significant step in strengthening Sri Lanka’s preparedness for nuclear power development by enhancing the regulatory framework and institutional capacity. The collaboration with the IAEA and participation of international experts contributed valuable insights into establishing effective nuclear safety regulations and guidance documents aligned with global standards.
