Inspiring Young Minds: Study Tour of Students from St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana to Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board successfully conducted a study tour for 35 students and three teachers from St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana on 24th February 2026. The objective of this visit was to enhancing student’s knowledge and understanding of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in Sri Lanka.
Mrs. Champa Dissanayake, Acting Director General of the SLAEB, welcomed the visitors and provided an introductory briefing. During the introductory session, Senior Scientific Officer Mrs. Uththara Perera presented an overview of the history of the organization, its core services, and the functions of the Gamma Center and the National Center for Non-Destructive Testing.
Deputy Director Mr. Priyanga Ratnayake delivered a presentation on the practical applications of nuclear technology in daily life, highlighting its contributions to the health and industrial sectors.
Subsequently, a practical experimental session was conducted to provide hands-on experience for the students. The session comprised measuring background radiation levels using survey meters and observing the paths of alpha and beta particles using cloud chambers.
In addition, Assistant Director Mr. Malinda Ranaweera delivered a lecture on the Nuclear Power Planning Programme, including the current status and insights into emerging developments in the field.
Following the practical and technical sessions, the students visited the laboratories of the Life Sciences Division, Radiation Protection Services Division, and Industrial Application Division. During these visits, they were introduced to the routine laboratory operations and actively observed ongoing activities, gaining valuable insight into the real-world applications of nuclear science and technology in research, safety, and industrial services.
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board invite educational institutions interested in expanding their knowledge in nuclear science and related technologies. Schools and universities may submit formal requests to the Director General to organize similar study tours. The Board remains committed to promoting awareness and supporting education in the field of nuclear technology in Sri Lanka.
