Expert Mission to Establish Beta Spectrometric Technique in Sri Lanka

work group One of the major tasks of Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) is to establish nuclear analytical procedures needed for Socio – economic development of Sri Lanka.
The Life Sciences Division (LSD) of SLAEB has already established series of analytical procedures accredited as per ISO 17025 standards. These procedures are being used to fulfill regulatory requirement in the country. Especially it is needed to control the radioactive Cs-137 and Sr-90 levels in milk and other food items as per the Gazettes notification L.D-B. 36/ 21st July 1995
Although LSD has the capability and capacity to analysis Cs-137 it was necessary to establish analytical procedure for Sr-90 in milk as there was no laboratory in Sri Lanka for obtaining this service. It has now been able to establish Sr -90 analysis in milk food. Analysis by Beta spectroscopy with the technical support received nuclear the IAEA national project IAEA/SRL / 0011 titled “Upgrading Nuclear Analytical Capabilities of the SLAEB.”

The IAEA Expert Dr. S. Moebius, Radiochemist, was at the LSD during the period 23rd -27th January 2017 to assist LSD staff in establishing this techniques in Sri Lanka.

The analytical procedures is to be applied to the analysis of milk and drinking water, especially bottled water for radium and radon which are of great health concern. An analytical service will be a made available in future for any relevant customer.
