Mr.Vajira Ariyaratna Waduge


Mr Waduge is currently holding the position of Director, Life Sciences Division of and has completed 27 years of service at the Institute. 

Mr Waduge, graduated from the University of Peradeniya majoring Chemistry and then obtained his Master Degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colombo.

He started his career as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya and then joined the Atomic Energy Authority as a Scientific Officer in Dec 1986.  He subsequently promoted to the positions of Senior Scientific Officer, Head of the Division, Senior Deputy Director, and Director.  During his career at the AEA, he has been exposed to the field of Nuclear Science and Technology extensively through various trainings and fellowships overseas. He has received training on the applications of Nuclear Science and Technology at the Nuclear Research Centre, Julich in West Germany, Radio Isotope School in Tokyo Japan, Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), South Korea, Dept. of Analytical Chemistry, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary.  Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) - University of the State of Baden-Germany.  Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTEC), Islamabad, Pakistan,  Bhaba Atomic Energy Research Centre (BARC) in India. 

He has also been awarded one year Fellowship at the European Joint Research Centre (JRC), in Italy, another year at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), in Japan, three months Fellowship in Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Physics and Nuclear Techniques of University of Krakow, Poland, and three months fellowship at the Seibursdorf laboratories of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. 

During his career, he has been a part and partial of several Technical Co-operation (TC) projects supported by the IAEA and through which it was possible for the AEA to initiate Gamma and X-ray analytical facilities which are well established at present. 

Currently, Mr. Waduge is functioning as the National Project Counterpart for two on-going IAEA/TC projects, through which infra-structure development and upgrading of existing analytical laboratory facilities are foreseen.   At the same time, he is leading several coordinated research programmes and regional projects which are aimed at specific objectives of peaceful applications of utilization of Nuclear Science and Technology. 

He has been playing an important role in the development of nuclear analytical capabilities and capacities of the Institute as there were no laboratory facilities available for the AEA at the time of his joining the Institute in 1986.
